Health coverage for my husband; pending social security number

Hello,
I work in France with a Talent Passport visa and now hold a residence permit. My husband joined me with a Talent Passport Family visa and also has his residence permit. He is not currently working.

We applied for his social security number with CPAM Paris in March 2025. In June 2025, we were asked to submit his original birth certificate (in original language) and passport copy, which we sent via Depotdoc. Since then, no updates.

I would like to know:

1. How long does it usually take to process such a file after submitting additional documents?

2. Once he gets his social security number and Carte Vitale, from what date will he be covered — from March 2025 (application date) or from the date the number is issued?

3. In the meantime, if he needs medical visits or hospital care, how are expenses handled? Can they be reimbursed retroactively once his number is assigned?

4. Should we just wait or we can write a letter to CPAM Paris to ask for any update?

Thank you for your help.

Best regards
Mehar

Hello KohliM,

First of all, processing times can fluctuate depending on the type of files and the number of files being processed by your caisse primaire d'assurance maladie (CPAM).

As we do not have access to your husband's file from this forum, for confidentiality reasons, I would advise him to contact his CPAM to review his personal situation and check whether additional documents are required to obtain his social security number.

To contact CPAM, you will find informations on this link : "How to call the French Health Insurance Advice Lines? "

If your husband needs medical care and has not yet received his social security number, don't worry.

The doctor, pharmacy or hospital will give him a "feuille de soins" (brown paper) for each treatment he receives. As soon as he has received his social security number, your husband can return these completed and signed "feuille de soins", together with any medical prescriptions (if applicable), to his CPAM to obtain his reimbursements.

You can find useful informations by reading this topic named : How to be covered if I am a « Passeport talent » or a « Passeport talent famille » holder ?

Have a nice day.
