How do I obtain my social security number, Vitale card, and EHIC as an EU passport holder who has been living overseas?

I recently got a job in Paris so we have just moved here from a non-EU country, where we were both born. My spouse holds a Hungarian passport, but does not have an EHIC, as they have not lived there long term in the past. We are currently expecting our first child in early December, so we are trying to figure out how my spouse need to proceed in order to obtain their

  • Social Security Number
  • Vital card
  • EHIC card

As one might expect, due to the nature of the pregnancy we are in a hurry to try and get this done as soon as we can.

Thanks for the response. I had come across that answer before, but my understanding was that application applied to people who had already been living in France for 3 months. I am not from Europe, but my spouse holds an EU passport, however as they have lived outside of EU they do not have an EHIC.

My understanding was that because I am employed here, we are both able to get the social security number and health insurance from when I started work here, but it is unclear exactly how that process should be completed.

You can apply directly because you are working here in France. It will be the same for your wife who is an European non active citizen but comes here in France to live with you. This procedure of family reunification is called in french "regroupement familial".

You will find further information reading this answer (in french) on the familiy reunification. It explains that if you are working here in France or if you are already affiliated under the French health system, the members of your family (wife and underage child or dependant child under 20 years old), they can apply for their registration with the Assurance Maladie from when they arrive in France.

Your wife has to fill in the printed Form application for the right to health insurance (S1106) (PDF) attached with the listed documents in the preceding topic.
