Numéro de sécurité sociale provisoire : impossible de créer mon compte ameli et d'obtenir ma carte Vitale

Hello, I am an international student. I currently have a temporary social security number, so I cannot create my ameli account. I sent my ID photo and a copy of my ID by tracked mail for my Carte Vitale application, and La Poste confirms delivery on 29 July 2026. Since then I have received no reply and no card. The English-language helpline is unavailable whenever I call.

Could you tell me:

how long it usually takes to get the definitive number for someone born abroad, and which documents may be requested;

how to follow my file without an ameli account;

which proof of coverage I can use until the card arrives;

what to do if the file seems stuck (for example after moving between two départements)?

Hello NADARAJAN,

To access your ameli account, you must have a certified social security number. The processing time for the certification procedure may vary from a "caisse primaire d'assurance maladie (CPAM)" to another.

If you filled up the green form for your carte Vitale, it means that your social security number is already certified and your card is probably on the way.

To make sure the process is well-going and which CPAM handles your file after your moving, I advise you to contact again our English speaking helpline, during the low traffic hours before 10 a.m. or during the lunch time. Also, awainting for your physical carte Vitale, you can use an "attestation de droits" to prove your entitlement in the French healthcare system. If yo do not have one, you can request it when you will call the helpline.
