Social security number for alternance (non-EU student)

I am a new student which will start my studies on 1st September in a private university in Paris. The university offers a possibility to do alternance with a company, a possibility which I used and found a company to work for. Everything was going smoothly until my university asked me for a social security number in order to declare the alternance contract. They got also in contact at first with the company to find a way to get a social security number. The situation seems now a bit complicated because the company has its own rules and cannot issue a temporary number, while the university is quite slow in replying. I am found in a situation where the only hope is getting this NIA from assurance maladie. I have already submitted my dossier and all documents are validated. What worries me is that there is a rule about the NIA (provisional social security number), that I can only get it when the university starts so 1st September. The problem is that my company is expecting to close the procedures before 1st September since that is the day agreed (from university and company) for the alternance contract to start. My final question is: Does there exist any way to get the NIA before the university starts officially or not? Can there not be any exception in such difficult cases? Please help as I feel I am in a never-ending loop and it is not even my fault.

Hello Chiho,

First of all, I advise you to read this topic about signing a working contrat without having a french social security number.

I want to precise that being registered in french healthcare system and having a social security number, implies that yo do work in France or you currently study in France or you have been living permanently in France for at least 3 months.

If you are not in one of those situations, your application will not be processed and no social security number can be created yet.

If you need some help regarding your request, you can contact the CPAM’s English speaking line, by dialling 09 74 75 36 46.

The line is open from Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Hello Christelle,

Thank you for your answer!

I checked the topic that you suggested however it is different from my case as my contract is contrat d'appretissage and not CDD or CDI. The process suggested in the topic does not apply in my case. I am a resident of France since 2 august as a student and have already send all the documents needed to open my case at l'assurance maladie and they got also validated. The only problem is that in the portal it says that I can get the NIA only when my studies start which is on 1st September. Is there any way to get the number before the start of studies? Thank you!

Hello Chiho,

Unfortunately, because of safety and confidentiality issues, we can’t reach any of your information or file from this forum.

The processing times vary depending on the type of files and the number of files being processed by your caisse primaire d'assurance maladie (CPAM).

If you need help regarding this request, you can contact the CPAM’s English or French Advice Lines.
