Confirm health insurance eligibility and obtain social security number?

In order to be covered by the French healthcare system upon your return to France, you must be working in France or, if you are not in employment, have been living in France on a stable and regular basis for more than 3 months.

This three-month waiting period does not apply:

- if you were registered with the Caisse des Français de l’Étranger (CFE);

- if you come back for your studies and are enrolled at univeristy or for an internship (depending of the contribution you will receive). More information on centre des liaisons européennes et internationales de sécurité sociale (Cleiss) website.

- if you are receiving benefits from the caisse d'allocations familiales (Caf);

- if you are back after having undertaken "volontariat international en entreprise (VIE)";

- as part of family reunification.

Upon your arrival in France, you must complete and submit form S1106, "Demande d'ouverture des droits à l'assurance maladie", to your local caisse primaire d'assurance maladie (CPAM) accompanied by:

- your bank details;

- a copy of an identity document;

- if you are not in employment in France, any document proving that you have been resident in France for more than 3 months or any document proving that you can benefit for an imediate enrollment to French healthcare system;

- an employment contract or a payslip if you are employed, or proof of registration with the guichet unique if you are self employed.
