Question en attente de réponse

Social Security number

My Wife and I are both Americans and own a house in France. We just received our long stay visa/ one year residency card and would like to apply for a heath card. I’m retired and my wife is soon to be retired. I understand we must first apply for a Social Security number. Can you please explain the steps we need to take?

Owning an house is not enough.

Are you living in France?

Dear Anonyme,

your question is missing some details. You can apply for social security after you move to France, meaning you have to produce a proof of residence when you apply.

Make sure your visa/residency card is among the ones accepted by the Assurance Maladie, as some types of visa do not qualify [Données masquées]

Depending on your situaton, you may have to justify 3 months of stay in France to qualify for social security as a non-employed person (specific rules may apply to persons with foreign retirement pension).

Hello Tammy123,

In order to get a social security number, to obtain a social security number, you must reside in France legally and permanently. Once your address is regularized, you can apply for health insurance by providing your three most recent utility bills and other documents.. As soon as you have a regular residency, you can apply for your health care coverage by sending your 3 last utility bills and additional documents.

Please look at this topic entitled : "How to be covered if I am not working and I am a non-European citizen ?".

You must send one application per person by post or drop it off in your CPAM's mailbox office.

You can find your CPAM's address on our website ameli.fr, section "Adresses et Contacts".
