Proof of Civil Status for Foreign Student?

Hello,

I am a Nigerian student in France. I am making preparations to register for French Social Security, and I would like some clarifications about the proof of civil status document.

• I have a clear, PDF scan of my original birth certificate, which was issued when I was born. It features both of my parents names. I would like to ask if this would be valid as a proof of civil status?

• In addition, my birth certificate was issued in English - will a sworn French translation be required?

• Is it acceptable to use other documents such as a birth attestation letter or a "fiche d'etate civile" obtained from the Nigerian Embassy in France?

Hello Angel,

As your original birth certifcate makes appear names of both of your parents, it should be accepted.

The translation will be necessary and has to be done by an official translator. You can find one on this link from the Cour de Cassation website : "Trouver un expert agréé ou un traducteur agréé."

Finally, it is better to provide your birth certificate than other kind of documents that could delay your application.
