Social security number from 4 years ago?

Hi, I'm a Chinese student who studied in Le Havre for one year in 2017-2018 and received a permanent social security number. Then I finished my study in 2018 and came back to China. Now I am about to go to Paris for my internship and studies. Do I need to apply for a new social security number? Or can I use my old number?

Hello Juliane,

If you have a permanent social security number, you will keep it all your life long.

Once you arrive in France, you will just have to update your file sending the form S1106  "Demande d'ouverture des droits à l'assurance maladie", along with your RIB (relevé d'identité bancaire), a copy of your passport and visa, copy of a proof of residency (utility bill) and the document showing that you are here for an internship.

Have a nice day.

Thank you for your reply. I have one detail to confirm with you: I am a student of a French business school and I can provide proof of school registration, can I apply for health insurance immediately in this case? Or do I still need to provide the “proof of residency (utility bill)” you mentioned after 3 months to prove that I have been living in France for 3 months and apply for the insurance?

In addition, I have encountered a new problem at the moment.
I'm pretty sure I have a PERMANENT social security number because I successfully logged into my CAF account with that number a few days ago. However, when I contacted CPAM, the consultants told me that they could not find any documentation associated with this number, nor even any documentation associated with the temporary number that I had used. In this case, do I need to reapply for a temporary social security number on etudiant-etranger.ameli.fr?

Hello Juliane,

We don't need a proof of residency for 3 months. As soon as you arrive in france, you can send your aplication to your local CPAM.

Regarding your social security number, as Sabine explained, you will keep the same one all your life long. That's why you can use it to access to your CAF account.

CPAM closed your rights when you left France. To be registered again, please send the documents Sabine mentionned, by post.

Unfortunately, because of safety and confidentiality issues, we can’t reach any of your information or file from this forum.

Have a nice day.
