I lived in France until April/2024, but now I live in Belgium while my husband lives in Paris. Can I apply for a assurance maladie? I have a mutuelle from his work already but my Carta Vitale is expired

Hello roberta,

If you do not live permanently in France or if you do not have a French employment contract, you cannot be covered by the Assurance Maladie health insurance scheme, except if you are dependant of your husband and your husband works in France as a cross-border worker.

I would point out that if your husband, who works in France, returns to Belgium at least once a week, he is a cross-border worker and can therefore have his healthcare costs covered by the Assurance Maladie in France and in Belgium.

In this case, if you are not working and not covered by Begium health insurance scheme, you may also receive benefits in France for yourself and your family members who are recognised as entitled beneficiaries under Belgian legislation, provided that you do not claim social cover under any other heading.

For treatment received in Belgium, if you and members of your family are not entitled to social cover under Belgian legislation, you may be entitled as a beneficiary if Belgian legislation recognises you as such.

As a first step, I suggest that you check your social cover with Belgium.

If you are not entitled to any cover from the Belgian organisation, I would advise your husband to review his personal situation and status with his local caisse primaire d'assurance maladie (CPAM) in Paris.

He will find their coordonates under the section "adresses et contacts" on ameli.fr.

If he does not speak French, he can contact the CPAM's English speaking line dialling 09 74 75 36 45. This adice line is open from Monday to Friday, form 8:30 a.m to 5:30 p.m.

Have a nice day
