Social security number and applying for French Healthcare

Hello. My husband and I are Americans residing in France. We are retired. We are trying to apply to the French Healthcare system for the first time. I have printed the S1106a form. Do we fill out the form and bring it or mail it to the local CPAM office with the any necessary documents to start the process of getting our carte Vitale and social security numbers? Also, would the local CPAM office be able to assist us in ensuring our application and documents are correct? Thank you for you assistance.

Hello ABrooks,

First of all, I recommend that you consult this forum topic, which will provide you with information on the steps to take to register: How to be covered if I am not working and I am a non-European citizen ?

You can send your application by post or drop it off at your local CPAM office.

If you would like an agent to check that your file is complete, you must make an appointment by telephone: How call the French Health Insurance Advice Lines ?

However, these operators are not responsible for processing membership applications. As a result, additional documents may be requested by the relevant department at a later date.

Have a wonderful day.

You can bring it to your local cpam or send it by « letter » or maybe online here: https://depotdoc.fr/ if your département is partner.

Not all office cpam accept to check documents without appointment (and to set appointment you need to already have your security social number)

When you will have send all the documents there will be weeks (can be 2/3/4 or a lot more) before it is registered by your cpam. Then you will receive a letter or an e-mail with your number and they will tell you to create your ameli account (but most of time they don’t send you the temporary password and you must call them…).
From the application ameli you will be allowed to order your vital card.

During the process, if you are going to the doctor, they will make you pay and they will give you a brown form « feuille de soins ». Keep it and fill it when you receive your number and then you can send it (by letter) or bring it to your cpam to be refunded.
