Hello Khaled,

A foreign person wishing to join the French social security scheme must provide a full copy of a birth certificate or an extract of a birth certificate with "filiation" (names of the parents), translated by a sworn translator (originals or certified copies).

To consult the list of sworn translators registered with the Court of Appeal, please click on the following link: https://www.courdecassation.fr

Depending on the country of origin, legalisation or an apostille may be required. The production of a multilingual birth certificate means you don't need a legalisation or apostille.

To find out which documents you need to provide depending on your situation, please contact your local caisse primaire d'assurance maladie (CPAM).

If you need some help regarding this request, you can contact the CPAM’s English speaking line, by dialling 09 74 75 36 46.

The line is open from Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Have a nice day

Hello,

I am an international student currently registering for French Social Security (Assurance Maladie), and I need to provide a translated birth certificate. My birth certificate was issued in Lebanon.

Before I proceed with the translation, I would like to clearly understand the exact procedure required so that my birth certificate will be accepted by your office.

My questions are:

Is it mandatory that the translation be done by a sworn translator in France (a translator certified by a French Court of Appeal)?

If I complete the translation in Lebanon, what type of certification must the translation have?

Is the translator’s stamp and signature enough?

Or must it be certified by a Lebanese translator and then authenticated by the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs?

Or must it be validated/confirmed by the French consulate in Beirut?

Do you require authentication/legalization of the original birth certificate (for example: Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or the French consulate), or is a certified translation alone sufficient?

I kindly request that you provide the exact steps to follow before I proceed, to ensure that my document will be accepted by Assurance Maladie.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.
