Civil status documents in Portuguese are accepted by CPAM without translation. However, your CPAM can request a translation if necessary.

I therefore recommend that you contact your CPAM to check whether your situation requires translation.

I'm writing further to your recent correspondence about translating my birth certificate for my registration with French Sécurité Sociale (CPAM). I would like to clarify the following:

Translation Requirement for EU citizens: I understand my birth certificate was issued in Brazil and it is in Portuguese. As a Portuguese citizen living in France; I would like to verify if I need to translate my birth certificate, even though I am a EU citizen.

[Données masquées] If I do require a translation, I will have it done by a sworn translator. Would you please confirm if CPAM accepts translations with a digital (electronic) signature or do they require the translation in a physical version with a recognized hand written signature?

Apostille Requirement for the Translation: Lastly, my original birth certificate has already been apostilled; could you please confirm if I would require a further apostilled also on the translated version, or if the apostille on the original is sufficient.

As explained by our experte Mélanie below, apostille can be required, depending on the country you were born.

Regarding translation, you cannot provide a translation from a UK translator. I advise you to reach this website : https://www.courdecassation.fr/mes-demarches/trouver-un-expert-agree-ou-un-traducteur-agree where you should find a list of official translators and their translations are recognized and approved by the French Health Care system.

I am writing to follow up on my application for registration with the French Social Security system. I received a letter indicating that my dossier is incomplete and that I must resubmit my birth certificate, this time with a proper translation. Although I reside in France as an EU citizen (Portuguese nationality) and my birth certificate was issued in Brazil, could you please confirm whether a sworn translation is still mandatory under these circumstances?

Type of Translation Accepted:

I intend to use a sworn translator. Would you accept a digital translation with an electronic signature, or does the translation need to be a physical, original document with a handwritten or notarised signature?

Hello Paula,

A foreign person wishing to join the French social security scheme must provide a full copy of a birth certificate or an extract of a birth certificate with "filiation", translated by a sworn translator (originals or certified copies).

However, some civil status documents are acceptable without translation. For example, to prove their civil status, European nationals can present a multilingual birth certificate produced by the authorities in their country of origin. Some countries have signed an agreement allowing them to issue multilingual civil status certificates.

Civil status documents drawn up in certain European languages are admissible without a translation.

Depending on the country of origin, legalisation or an apostille may be required. The production of a multilingual birth certificate means you don't need a legalisation or apostille.
